Technical Specialist I – Method Development & Special Analysis
The Research Support Services function comprises approximately 80 staff and provides key support to GR&D through the management of tobacco stocks, processing and manufacturing of tobacco & cigarette samples, physical & analytical testing and the planning & scheduling of these services.

The job holder is responsible for preparing and analysing test samples using a variety of testing instrumentation and the generation of test reports. In the majority of instances the job holder will be developing solutions and providing advice by applying their expertise to solve non routine or novel problems or challenges. The role will involve providing guidance to more junior or less experienced colleagues. This work is undertaken according to scheduled work programmes, agreed customer deadlines and to a defined quality standard.

•Professional/academic achievement in Chemistry or a related physical science equivalent to 1st degree level. Achievement of membership at Member level of the Royal Society of Chemistry is desirable.
•Relevant technical experience resulting in a thorough knowledge of good laboratory practice and method development using complex instrumental analysis techniques (including GCMS, GCMS/MS, LCMS, LC/MS/MS, ICP/MS).
•We would expect someone who has been in the tobacco, food, environmental, forensic, pharmaceutical or contract analytical services industries for around 5-7 yrs to have and to be able to demonstrate that experience.
•Good awareness of aspects of analytical science and technology.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the following success factors;

•Method development and technical projects directed and delivered within budget, to plan and expected quality.
•Successful development and implementation of new or improved existing analytical methods, techniques or procedures.
•Key representative in interactions with laboratory or technical suppliers, industry colleagues and/or external scientific bodies.
•Write and support technical manuscripts for peer-review publication and external scientific forums.
