Reporting to the group General Manager in the UK, the Head of Technology will drive the strategic expansion of our online classifieds business here in UK and Ireland. The Head of Technology will have a keen commercial understanding of technology. They should be experienced in and passionate about, an environment where technology is the key revenue driver for the business.
The Head of Technology should be experienced in scaling technology teams and creating the technical architecture and infrastructure to deliver a great customer experience across multiple geographies and markets. The Head of Technology will be a part of Gumtree management team and also partner closely with the rest of the leadership team to co-create the business strategy and the operational plans to deliver on the potential of this exciting business.
This responsibility includes planning, developing, and delivering our product and the underlying software development systems. The person will identify and integrate technology advancements and next-generation changes to our product and underlying platform.
Responsibilities:
Organisation
Attract, retain, engage and develop world class engineering capability. Lead, coach, develop and inspire technology leaders and individual contributors across the organisation. Ensure there is a very strong customer centric culture and a focus on accountability and performance, with clear line of sight between organisation strategy and individual goals. Liaise with counterparts across the group to leverage existing technology components as applicable. As a member of the UK & Ireland leadership team, actively contribute to the development of business strategy and operational plans
Technology Strategy
Define the technology strategy for the group.
Develop objectives and drive overall product strategy which takes into consideration business objectives, competitive landscape, customer needs, and budget constraints. .
Design, develop and implement the necessary technology migration plans for the company upgrading technology to create sustainable advantage for the business. |

• Hold a BSc in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.
• Be highly analytical and structured thinker with an excellent ability to put complex ideas into clear frameworks and to use data to drive strategic objectives and priorities.
• Have substantial functional knowledge to provide technical leadership
• Be a team player with excellent communication skills who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment, enjoys intellectual challenge, a fast pace
The candidate will demonstrate:
• 5+ years of experience is leading a large Product Development group (>30), including ideally off-site, outsourced and direct reports
• 10+ years of technology management experience, with ecommerce experience being preferable
• An innate understanding of technology and how to use it to provide competitive advantage that translates into building outstanding products. A true Technologist’.
• The ability to lead and inspire product management and engineering professionals and succeed in a fast changing and highly competitive market, keeping the team focused on critical near-term deliverables while fostering a compelling long term vision.
• A track record in building high quality customer facing products and services
• A track record building and developing high performing teams and attracting and developing technology talent that focuses relentlessly on the external customer
• Experience with architecting high volume web systems or complex transaction client-server systems
• Experience in requirements analysis, design, development and unit testing of distributed, fault-tolerant applications with particular attention to security, scalability and high performance experience in software development |
